In the southeast corner of Oregon, huge blocks of earth rose up as mountain ranges, leaving lower spaces between them. Steens Mountain is one of these fault blocks. The low areas, called basins, fill with sand eroded from the mountains on either side. The basin to the east of Steens Mountain contains the Alvord Desert.
