Blue Pole

Blue Pole

This is the north pole of Saturn. Since it is winter here, the pole is tilted away from the sun, and the rings are at their maximum tilt as well. All the dark stripes are the shadows of the rings! Under that cooling shadow, the upper cloud decks of Saturn have faded away revealing blue underneath. We don't know why this happens.
