Ten Thousand Galaxies

Ten Thousand Galaxies

The Hubble Space Telescope was aimed at a small patch of sky that seemed nearly empty. Over several days, a trickle of photons arrived, and built up an image of far distant galaxies that formed when the universe was just 5% of its current age. These early galaxies are much more distorted and chaotic than more modern ones. This image is known as the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field.
