Aurora from Above

Auroras are also known as northern lights, but the ones in this photo are actually southern. They are caused by charged particles that stream off the sun and are channeled into the poles by Earth's magnetic field. The particles collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere, and ionize them, which makes them glow.
