Coronal Loops

Coronal Loops

The sun's corona, just above the surface, is hundreds of times hotter than the surface itself. This image, taken in ultraviolet light, only shows structures that are at least a million degrees Celsius, so the surface is just black. It was taken by the TRACE satellite to help scientists figure out where the corona's extra heat comes from.
